Summary

Description
English: This image captures Lift Lock No. 6 on the historic Illinois & Michigan Canal, situated in Channahon, Illinois. The photograph showcases the 1848 lock tender house adjacent to the mule tow path. Viewed from the southwest on the north side of the Channahon dam, the scene stretches across the DuPage River. The Illinois & Michigan Canal, completed in 1848, created a waterway connection from Lake Michigan at Chicago to the Illinois River at LaSalle, eventually leading to the Mississippi River. This canal, now 175 years old, played a pivotal role in establishing a navigable link between the eastern states of the U.S., via the Erie Canal, and the western territories, including access to the Gulf of Mexico. The canal's completion was instrumental in Chicago's development into a major transportation hub to the west, catalyzing its rapid growth and historical significance as one of the fastest-growing cities in world history.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 66000332.

The original wood lock doors were removed after the canal was officially closed in 1933. A fixed concrete guard lock door was put in its place at the east end of the lock. The canal was originally 96 miles long and contained 15 locks.
