Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Archive/Creation of a template for newspapers and magazines
Creation of a template for newspapers and magazines
Does not require engineering resources
- Problem: Wikisource is an excellent tool for transcribing paper works online. However, a majority of online archives are newspapers and magazines and these media are significantly absent from Wikisource. Current transcription models can prove to be a real headache when it comes to transcribing newspaper or magazine articles, which discourages many from tackling them on Wikisource.
- Who would benefit:
- All editors on Wikisource
- All users of Wikisource
- Researchers
- Proposed solution:
- When a file is registered as a newspaper or magazine on Wikisource, the editing page should offer a different template of transcription.
- The new template should allows the editor to have an interface that recreates the organization of chosen newspaper or magazine articles.
- The creation of a "calendar" page which allows to locate the newspapers or magazines transcribed according to the year, the month and the day of their publication. To view an example of a calendar page, see this Gallica link.
- More comments: Newspapers and magazines represent a wealth of information on thousands of subjects. These could be offered to all Wikisource users if only their transcription was made easier and more efficient.

Discussion
The idea with calendar is good, but also need possibility for more issues in one day. This can be done by adapting cs:Template:Kalendář, wchich can made calendar for every month. But this is local solution, global would be better.JAn Dudík (talk) 10:24, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Guillaumelandry: This appears to be something that can be done on the wiki by creating the appropriate templates. Therefore, I am archiving. Thank you for taking part in the survey. DWalden (WMF) (talk) 18:00, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
